And Francine said she got an invite for the "2014 Winter Games" and we're in the year 2014...but this was made in 2001. Wtf? Coincidence? Or did they edit this out and just made Francine say '14 then '01?
Arthur operates on a floating timeline to stay contemporary so the show always takes place in the current year. At the time, the 2014 Winter Games were seen as a future event. Since it's 2014, that episode won't be brought up (because the Arthur writing team has never been meta like that), but a reference to something like the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be made instead.

This. Arthur tries to keep up with the modern times for the current generation of kids. That's why the technology on the show has improved as well (smart phones, etc.).

The show is also great with how they've handled the issue of technology taking over kids' lives in more recent episodes like "The Play's the Thing" and "Muffy and the Big Bad Blog."
shareFrancine mentions the 2014 games because that would be the first winter games where she would be over 18 to compete in all of the sports. If she were 8 in 2001, she would be 21 in 2014.
