So Weird is certainly the best show Disney ever produced. Now, that's not to say that I haven't liked some of Disney's more comedic offerings. I thoroughly enjoyed Lizzie McGuire. It had clever writing and was certainly ground-breaking in its own way. But, the first two seasons of So Weird remain in a class all by themselves. So Weird was the most complex, intense, dramatic, and mature show Disney ever produced. The proposed 3rd season was so dark/mature, in fact, that Disney refused to produce it. Disney instead created their own cheesy, watered down 3rd season that most fans refused to watch. I can't think of another children's show that can make that claim. It was ground-breaking not only in its examination of adolescence and family (ground Lizzie McGuire also tread) but in its exploration of the mythology and lore surrounding death. Again, I can't think of another Disney show that has dealt with similar subject matter. Nickelodeon came close with Are You Afraid of the Dark, but I think Disney upped the ante by exploring death not with weekly campfire stories, but rather a recurring cast.
I feel bad for today's children. The modern Disney channel no longer takes risks or assumes its audience can handle depth. Instead, the network seems perfectly content producing one ridiculous, slapsticky sitcom after another. After tuning in to this weekend's marathon, it's clear that DCOMs have changed as well. Gone are the elements of struggle or realism, the modern DCOMs (much like Disney itself these days) are all shine and no substance.
