What was that bird Ash saw in the first episode, was it ever revealed? I stopped watching it after johto, so, really, I have no idea.

Ash saw the rare golden bird Ho'oh. The strange thing is that Ho'oh only appears in Johto (at least in Gold and Silver); in the first series, Ash and company explore Kanto province. The rare silver bird Lugia also appears only in Johto.
