ash was 10 when the first show started and that was in 97, so that would make him 21. and Brock would be closer to his 30s. my point being shouldn't they age the characters some what?

There are only around 20-30 episodes per season. Many of these take place over 1-3 days. So no, they're not as old as that!
Ash is about 11/12 now. Brock will be 16/17.
Misty, before she left, was 12, so she's 13/14 now.
some eps will span a few days. and the even mention it one of the early eps that it's been a year(and brock was depressed he missed out on the bikinis babes)and that was in the OG pokemon eps.
