The proportions of the characters faces were so effed up

Seriously, Nigel must have passed on his deformed genes on to Eliza, because the two of them are freakish looking. Nigel has a neck skinnier than his arm, a nose that's half as big as his head, and a *beep* up bowling pin shaped head. Eliza lacks a chin and her mouth comes off the bottom of her head, not to mention her face is shaped vaguely like the body of an acoustic guitar. And to top it all off, they're gingers.

I'm pretty sure I'd vomit if I ever saw these people in real life I'd vomit. Debbie's lucky she got her mom's hot genes.

Am I missing something, but what is so wrong about people with ginger hair? It's just another hair colour!

Some cartoons have had characters with unusual or exaggerated features. Remember the kids in the "Jumanji" series?

Well I just like to make fun of them, seriously, what good is it going to do to get all riled up over something like how they look so unrealistic? Its tv I mean many cartoons exaggerate the details that is what makes them unique I guess. Like I said I love making fun of Nigel's big nose and the way he talks priceless just priceless haha! that is what makes The Wild Thornberrys so much fun to watch. And redheads are not bad they are pretty just like everyone else.

I always thought Eliza's head was too big for her body.

I think it was to show she was not interested in her looks and she was more focused on the animals. Debbie was obviously prettier then Eliza, but thats what Debbie cared about. In most shows the main character is very pretty and I think the creators thought that having a pretty or cute character would take away from the premise of the show. Also, Nigel looks like Eliza as well as shares similar interests to her. I think it just shows that they care about different things.

It's just a cartoon series. Honestly, what's the big deal? This sort of stuff happens all the time. Most of the characters in The Simpsons are yellow, and lots of people watch that anyway, so what's it matter if they've warped a few faces in this show?

Bit of a late reply but I think what the OP meant was not just that they're ginger but as well as having freakishly deformed faces, massive teeth, grossly disproportional anatomy , glasses, unattractive they have red hair (and speaking as a ginger myself I know that it's social norm to pick on them as kids at school or just mention the unusual cloud of their hair).
Basically they put all the traits together to make a person typically as unattractive as possible , ginger and all.
I like it though its refreshing. Nigel and Eliza look hideous but I still love them anyway because by having less attractive protagonists there's do distraction from their cool personalities. Good call on the producers part I think :)

When I was a kid and this show came out, the character designs were, hands down, my biggest gripe about the show. The show itself was fun and I watched it a lot, but man, the people, the animals? WEEEEEIRD LOOKING! (Thanks to being from Kalasky Csupo animation, the same people behind Rugrats and probably AHHH! Real Monsters.)

When WB animated shows (Batman, X-Men:Evolution) around the same time had flat out AMAZING and realistic character designs, Nickalodeon cartoons always had exaggerated or really weird features. That's part of their charm, sure, and I get that Nick is "for kids", but I think unrealistic character designs weird or gross people out when the premise behind the show is so unique and cool. I mean, the designs can be off putting to the eye.
I was watching the movie tonight and took note that the characters hands are very tiny and humongously out of proportion to their giant heads.

This show could've been even more amazing if the designs weren't so darn goofy looking. If another studio had their hands on TWT, I'm sure the characters would've looked a lot more pleasing.

And, while I'm ranting, I have always thought Debbie's eyes looked like a snake's.
I mean, what normal human average (non-powered) character has eyes and pupils shaped like that?!
