Eliza's "secret"

I've been rewatching the series lately after buying the box set and I still love it. But I've had some thoughts as I go back through it.

Isn't Eliza's gift supposed to disappear the moment any human finds out that she can talk to animals? I just watched Dances With Dingoes and even though Debbie clearly catches her talking to animals, nothing happens. If it's just a matter of not admitting it (i.e. never saying "I can speak to animals") then she could have just denied it to her parents and said that Debbie was suffering from heat stroke.

Of course, she flat out admitted her "secret" to the aboriginal man the dingoes led her to, and obviously all of the aboriginals involved in the dream ceremony knew why they were doing it. So I'm not sure how that works....just seems like an inconsistency on the part of the writers. Especially since the second she revealed the truth in the movie, she lost the gift.

I always assumed that the man you are referring to was mystic like the shaman who gave her the powers. Maybe she can tell others with magic abilities? As for Debbie, I don't think she was as certain as she pretended to be.

From what I understand, it was admitting with her own words that she could talk to animals that would have made her lose it. I think I remember Eliza's fear being that she would be taken away and studied for her ability if anyone saw her talking to animals, not that she would lose the ability itself.
