How do people not understand....

The movie explains that the ghosts aren't aware that they're dead or fully aware of their surroundings but people seem somehow still confused that, for example, Crowe doesn't realize that no one interacts with him.

Your example illustrates Cole's saying that "they only see what they **want** to see." (my emphasis) You're right; discussing the movie with someone who doesn't pay attention to the "rules" that we as viewers have handed to us on a silver platter is very frustrating!

Speaking of which, this is an interesting commentary by the filmmakers:

yes indeed and watch when Night joins in re red and how he cleverly flashes up the RED zoloft and the tell tale lable

ie the VIEWER only sees what they are TAUGHT to see

They not only say flat out that the ghosts are not fully aware, they also show it at the end. Throughout the movie, Malcolm has been having difficulty opening the door to his basement office. In fact we never actually see him open it. At the very end, after he begins to realize he's a ghost, we see WHY he can't open the door. His widow has placed a table in front of thr door, blocking it. Malcolm never saw the table before, it just suddenly appears as he becomes cognizant of his true nature. That shows right there thst the ghosts will be unaware of even blatant physical objects

Well I don't think that many people are confused, but you're right - if they are that's not very smart of them.

But many people DO seemingly interact with Crowe. Of course the boy, but for example, in the restaurant scene she tells him Happy Anniversary. Of course, she's saying it to her dead husband and doesn't know he's "there" - but it would be understandable for him to not realize that reality.

But in hindsight it's clear that none of these people are actually interacting with him. For example, we see a doctor talking with him and Coles mom but in hindsight it's clear that the guy is just talking to the mom.

The whole point is you are supposed to be focusing on the little boy. Not noticing all those other things. In the beginning they are counting on the audience thinking the movie is mainly about the kid. Sure they throw stuff in about the Dr.

This is what M. Night does. Watch any of his movies.
