M. Night Shyamalan could have been a genius. This is proof.

Simply amazing filmmaking by him here. One of the best movies of all time.

One-hit-wonder IMO. Signs was stretched out beyong belief and boring. It's text-book case of trying to apply the same ingredients that worked before, but they don't.

Well, I usually want to watch my movies more than once, so far I've watched The Sixth Sense 4 times, and I have no desire to watch Signs ever again.

Unbreakable is one of the most original and compelling superhero films, I never get tired of it. That's at least 2 classic fantastic films, that's not a one hit wonder.

I think he's still a genius, no one average could've come up with something like this or Unbreakable. He's just lost his way. If he could find himself again, he can make a comeback.

Wide Awake, Unbreakable, Signs and The Village are all excellent as well, imo. The Visit is extremely fun and entertaining. While none are quite as perfect as The Sixth Sense, they're good enough to make me believe he's more than a one-hit wonder.

I saw the movie he wrote about the elevator, can't remember what it was called, on showtime or something a few years ago without knowing it was his writing and thought, this is what he could have done...so, maybe it is the directing part that has done him in. I also agree with below, Unbreakable was pretty damn good. So he's had at least 3 stories I found compelling. Maybe he needs to just write.

reply

He is a pretty good director, BUT he tried too hard to cram twists into every single one of his damn movies.

I mean, come on - not every single movie needs to "blow your mind" with a twist. It would have been a hundred times better if he just made good movies and threw in a mindbender every now and then.

reply

Still, I'd rather have his mindbenders than his airbenders 

No, he should keep on directing. He has an incredible "director's eye".

I just think he needs to choose the right scripts, stay away from twists, and stop believing in his own hype when he writes. He's an excellent director, and he's talented way beyond average. I hope he gets back to making at least an Unbreakable level film. I don't want him to be a two-hit wonder, and he is indeed that. At least up until now.

He's really talented. The Sixth Sense is such a great, timeless film. It's scary but with no cheap thrills, and well directed.

Unbreakable is another great film, and I really enjoyed Signs and The Village. I recently saw The Visit and it was also very good... A small but satisfying return to form for Shyamalan. I feel like he kept trying to top himself after several successes, and ended up going too far. It's so hard for me to believe the same guy who directed The Sixth Sense directed The Happening. I don't know if he started to believe his own hype, or received bum career advice. Those movies are polar opposites IMO, but despite some questionable films, I still consider him to be a good storyteller and director.

-It's Grandpa. And it sounds like he's gotten into the horseradish again.
