Why did the attic ghost hurt Cole?

That was a scary scene by the way. So if the ghosts wanted help from cole why did they hurt him? Especially the one locked in the attic by his master?

Isn't it stated? Cole says to his mom in the car "They're the ones who use to hurt me."

I am not certain but I personally think that the ghosts that Cole flees from get frustrated that he keeps running away and won't help them so lash out. How that will then convince someone not to be scared in the future is anyone's guess.

I think its 2 things:
1. What the above poster mentions: Frustration that Cole won't help them.
2. But I don't think that's why the Spanish man hurt Cole. I think the ghost was *caught up* in his own torment.
Remember the woman in Cole's kitchen that confused him for her abusive husband?
I think the Spanish ghost felt it was Cole that was keeping him imprisoned in there, wouldn't 'let him out'.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.

.... That ghost was Spanish? O.o

The Spanish ghost, the one who kept saying "Yo no quiero morir" in the tape? That ghost wasn't talking to Cole, it was talking to a younger Vincent, the man who shot Malcolm in the beginning.

They were trying to get him to listen. Some of the ghosts seemed to be stuck in an infinite loop. The one at the top of stairs was still trying to get out. When Cole was shoved in there, he must've grabbed him & pleaded with him. When Cole passed out, he relented because Cole could no longer help him.

And yes, the tape recorder scene was from Vincent. Malcolm was revisiting his old files because of the similarities between both boys. He noticed Vincent describing similar incidents and only then noticed the third voice in the room.

-Who is it?
-It's Grandpa. And it sounds like he's gotten into the horseradish again.

I admit that scene with the tape recorder kind of bothered me because a ghost shouldn't be able to access a tape recorder so easily. Makes you wonder how many other ghosts who as Cole said, "don't know they're dead" have technology they can access.

1, 2 Freddy's coming for you. 3, 4 better lock your door.

I agree. It's odd the ghost could be heard on the tape. I guess it could be explained in two ways though. 1) Malcolm can hear the ghost because he's unknowingly a ghost himself, and therefore more clairvoyant to the supernatural. 2) the ghost just happened to be recorded. Ghosts were shown "manipulating" objects before, such as Malcolm breaking the glass, attic ghost locking the door, or the spirit at the beginning who opened all the cabinets
