Toni Collette and Haley Joel Osment were robbed.

They both lost to performances that frankly didn't deserve it. Osment to Michael Caine in Cider House Rules, and Collette to Angelina Jolien in... M̶e̶a̶n̶ ̶G̶i̶r̶l̶s̶ Girl Interrupted?

Now not to speak badly of Michael Caine, but he had already won for Hannah and Her Sisters in '86, and the 1999 Oscars was packed with supporting Oscar talent. Even Caine himself said in his speech that he shared his statue with the other nominees and their amazing work that year. I think he knew he was just a safe, honorary choice. But frankly, Osment carried the emotional moments of Sixth Sense, with a complex character that is tough for a 10 year old to pull off.

And Toni Collette was simply amazing as well. I highly doubt Angelina's performance was any better than hers. Does anybody even remember that film?

THis happens in every Oscar ceeremony. Leonardo Di Caprio OR Matt Damon have never even been nominated for best actor. Clint Eastwood has never been nominated for best actor, only best director. I could go on forever.

Actually DiCaprio was nominated in 2005 for The Aviator, and Damon in 1998 for Good Will Hunting.

But I get what you're saying. Academy usually gets it wrong and has to repay an actor years later in an honorary Oscar, which ends up shafting other performers, and the cycle continues.

although several of the awards absolutely befuddle me,they are NOT a consensus forum, where a committee meets and decides, say, like a film critics award or the Pulitzers..the voting is secret ballot and comes from a wide range of crafts..sometimes hype or momentum wins out, sometimes a "message" film bullies them, and sometimes its sentimentality..but youre right, they do at least try to catch up..newman for the color of money, pacino for scent of a woman and denzel for training day were all,catch-up Oscars, and that's not particularly a bad thing..more times than not not, they get it right..over a dozen black performers since 1989,small independent films nominated for best picture,,young directors without influence getting nominations, foriegn directors like cuaron and inarittu winning the award,etc..theyre certainly not above reproach, but they do try to get it right, and theyre choices are no worse than golden globes, the brits, independent spirit,etc..

What are you talking about? Dicaprio and Damon have both been nominated multiple times. DicCaprio won this year for God's sakes.

Angelina did an amazing job in Girl Interrupted so I don't feel they just handed it to her undeserving. I do also think both Haley and Toni were incredible in their roles.

reply

Angelina is a very talented and beautiful actress.

I don't believe the original poster meant to suggest otherwise but was implying that the movie Mean Girls was not the sort of film that lent itself to award winning performances. I have no opinion on that myself, not having seen the movie in question.

Good Morning Hecate -
The OP was confused and corrected her original post. The movie was not mean girls which was a teenager comedy but Girl Interrupted, a movie she mentioned she never even saw. GI was about girls in a mental hospital in the '60s.

reply

Just saw the correction.

I saw Girl, Interrupted. It wasn't my favorite film, although it did have some good parts; I cried when the psychiatrist was driving Suzanne back to the hospital. Angelina's performance in this film may well be her best; she was quite good in it.

Still have to give the edge to Haley tho, who did such a phenomenal job at such a young age.

Although I think Haley was amazing, my win that year was Michael Clarke Duncan for The Green Mile. I was disappointed to see Michael Caine win.

reply

Michael Clarke Duncan should've won that year for his portrayal of John Coffey in "The Green Mile".

That's just my opinion, though.

But, yes, I agree that Osment was fantastic in this. So was Toni Collette. She was *miles* better than the extremely overrated Angelina Jolie.

But yeah, Osment and Duncan were both better than Caine that year.

The Oscars are complete nonsense and Osment's performance shattered Michael Caine's. Not even remotely close, 10 yr old or not, Osment was much more impressive.

I would say my memory is not what it used to be. But I don't remember what my memory used to be.
