Dungeon at the top of the stairs..

I found this scene incredibly eery, mostly because it appeared to tie in Philadelphia's history, much like those hanged at the school. The man references things that suggest he's from colonial times but more interesting is the dungeon itself - what was its use in a modern day house? Was it intended to part of the original structure but was kept as a little piece of history? I found it strange but interesting that the dungeon was featured in the house with no explanation - i have to just assume it was kept as a way to pay homage to the home's significant history but does anyone have more info on this? i found it really really cool.

Actually the bully boys tell
cole that in a drama play they're having, there is a dungeon, and cole has been chosen to play the role of prisoner. In the reality, the room just seems to be a strange, small storage cupboard at the today of the stairway. (That was the weird part for me - who builds a stairway that only leads to a small storage cupboard, and not to any rooms? If I remember right, the cupboard isn't just on a stair landing, it's the end of the stairway).

I thought it was a dumbwaiter. I assumed the hallway extended past that to a normal top floor of a home.
