You can see in M. Knight's later work he gets a lot better a setting up his trademark twist, but this was just bad (in comparison to his later movies). it relied on telling the story in a nonsensical way. he doesn't do this in later movies.

I am so glad that I am not as smart as some people who always say a movie is so predictable or that they had things figured out right from the start. Oh, I guess at times, I may think I have an inkling of what will happen, but for the most part, I'm usually just enjoying the movie.... in the dark, so to speak.

I had no clue of what was going on with Bruce Willis's character until about the last 15 minutes.
You have to be out of your mind to think this movie wasn't scary. It was absolutely terrifying, it had atmosphere like no other horror film and the ghosts were genuinely creepy. The tent scene scared me to death as a kid. It wasn't just that there were ''ghosts'' it was how they behaved and the tone set before they appeared.
