Did the lawnmower fix ITSELF?! WTF? SPOILERS

Am i blind or doesn't the lawmower break down just before he reaches his brothers house?? but the he starts it again when he follows the other tractors directions.

WTF? How does he restart the lawnmower when the engine gave up???

I admit that in my copy of the film for some reason I can't hear Alvin talking to the guy on the tractor.

Have you ever rebooted your PC and the problem that was there before is now gone? Suppose it overheated, for example? I'm not a mechanic, but it doesn't seem improbable to me that such a machine might need a little rest after a long trek it was not designed for.

Actually it's an interesting point.

Throughout this film, Alvin's journey is like a journey through time - he meets the young girl, then the family, the squabbling brothers, then reminisces with the old man about the war, Finally, his last encounter is with the priest.

An interesting progression. So logically, what is next? Some folk say that the giant mower that overtook him in a way represented God - this gave him the last push he needed, and thus his journey was complete - he succeeded in his journey despite doing it in a battered lawn mower.

Anyway, that's what some folks think. I certainly see the film along the lines of the first paragraph I wrote, the point about Gd is a good one, but like so much of Lynch it's open - what does it mean to You?

Well, being an atheist, I hadn't considered that interpretation. But it certainly seems to be a possibility. However, it seems to me that the mower didn't actually help him but rather caused a halt. So, perhaps it signifies death and rebirth, if one were to stay within your theory.

I can't say I'm fully convinced by any of these explanations.. it just seemed really weird to me!

Very possible for ignition components to get hot and quit working. They cool down, it runs again.

City folks and youngsters! Air-cooled motors like those on mowers are not built for extended run-times. As oldrusty suggested components such as ignition coils get hot and fail until they cool off. Vapor lock is also a likely culprit. When the carb cools it will start again. Even a slug of water in the gas would do it.

OT -no surprise that there are so many atheists that are TV and movie buffs. The one-eyed God is their salvation.

Very good point about the sequence of people he meets !

I always thought it ties in neatly with many other Lynch films.
Often they end with an "angel" helping the Hero. In this case the angel takes the form of a Tractor and it's driver.

other exmaples -
Eraserhead - women in the Radiator, Elephant Man - Merriks Mum, wild at heart - the good which, Twin peaks - an actual Angel....
