Other movies like this?

I'm under the impression the producers of this movie came up with the idea of contacting great directors known for R related material and challenging them to make thought-provoking G movies, and The Straight Story was the first of such movies. Did they proceed on this plan? Have any others been made? I think it's a great idea!

Did you read my original post? I don't think this answers my question.

Some anime maybe?

Grave of the fireflies, granted it might be a little crude for young viewers.
My neighbor totoro.

Not exactly g but along the lines (sweet, good vibe, heartfelt, if you are a cool parent your kids can probably digest them)

Radiodays
Cinema Paradiso
The Goodtimes Kid
Armacord
American graffiti

I know that doesn't exactly answer your question mr poster, I'm not really familiar with the way producers in hollywood work, but it's a list of movies that you might like if you dug SS.

Danny Boyle's glorious (if maybe not QUITE as glorious as "The Straight Story"... but if not it's doggone close) "Millions"?

Yo, Pencilneckedgeek, i hear what you're saying , and there's another film with a similar pedigree out there called 'Kikujiro'.

The director of kikujiro is a guy called Beat Takeshi, a little bit like a Japanese Quentin Tarantino, with a penchant for making violent and interesting R-rated films ...that is, until he made a very sweet G-rated film about a young boy called kikujiro.

To get the full effect of the director's about-turn, it is recommended to watch at least a couple of films from the back-catalogue (Brother, Hana-bi, and Zatoichi) before you watch Kikujiro.

I would also compare kikujiro with straight story as a film with a huge heart and and a skilled director's hand...

I thought that The World's Fastest Indian (starring Anthony Hopkins) was pretty similar to this movie. It's also based on a real-life story and is about a stubborn man who does what he has to do no matter what the obstacles before him, and about his interactions with others along the way.

BTW, The Straight Story is my favorite movie, bar none.

I didn't know Roger Donaldson(Fastest Indian) had a reputation for making R-rated films...

Ever heard of Species or The Getaway? Cadillac Man? White Sands? :-)

"The Straight story2 really reminded me of "Into The Wild" when i watched it last night. Although i think that's an R rated film, still has a simialr spirit though.

I agree with you this did remind me of "into the wild" or at the least it left me with the same feelings.

I can't think of movies by "R-directors", but here are a couple "thought-provoking G movies" that I absolutely love.

They may not all literally be G-movies, but they all feel like it to me. I love all these movies and I feel that they are low key, thought provoking, and have a lot to offer to anyone who watches them.

The Station Agent
In America
Pieces of April
Lost in Translation
The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Secret of Roan Inish
The Man in the Moon (Reese Witherspoon’s first movie; not the Jim Carrey movie with a similar title)
Savannah Smiles
Bye Bye Blues
Ponette
Miyazaki’s films (next 2)
My Neighbor Totoro
Whisper of the Heart

Very good question. If you liked this movie you may like "Tender Mercies". A nice, quiet, poignant film.

You could try John Carpenter's Starman. I'm not sure if it's actually rated G but it's fairly light-hearted compared to his better known horror and action movies.

And when Jack Crow and Buffy Summers joined forces, Edward Cullen never knew what hit him.
