He bought it, 10 bucks, causing the old man behind the counter a lot of distress and then never uses it during the whole movie!?

I'll add to the other responses by saying that he is shown using it to pick up wood in one scene (and no other), and we are meant to understand he continues to use it in that way every night for the entirety of his trip.

In other words it got used a lot.
