I thought it was his girlfriend, but when Spirit left, he met another horse, and seemed to have forgotten all about her. He was even going to take the other horse back to his homeland before she got shot, and died. Why did he ditch his first girlfriend?

Haha very observant point! It did look like his girlfriend didn't it? The way they shared grass together and faxed at each other, although I thought he was just being a flirt and bonding with "his" mares after all. I guess that's just horse life! You get kidnapped and taken away from your home and family you tend to find new people/horses to keep you going. She was no where near a big enough character for Spirit to hold on and wait for her throughout the entire movie til he gets home. She probably was just a mare he got along with rather than his girlfriend.
