Spirit is a great movie but I would also recommend:
* Black Beauty (1994)-> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109279/
* Black Beauty (1971) -> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066834/
* The Horse Whisperer -> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119314/
* Flicka -> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0434215/
* Misty, a great movie based on the book about the pony Misty from Chincoteague Island --> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055186/
* Cattle Annie and Little Britches, a film from 1981. It's not really about horses but there's a lot of horses in the movie which is about 2 young girls joining a gang of bandits. Look it up here ---> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082145/
* The Horse with the flying tail, this is actually a Disney documentary from 1960. It's about a Palomino stock horse named Nautical who eventually becomes a showjumping champion. I haven't seen it in ages and I hope to find it on VHS or DVD someday soon. --> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054993/
* The Strawberry Roan, this is an old western from 1948 (which means it's in black and white). It's about a young boy getting paralyzed after being bucked of a strawberry roan-coloured wild horse. The main character helps the horse escape death and eventually trains the horse so he can go back and help the paralyzed boy to get over his trauma. Great movie!! --> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0040840/
*Mustang!, a western from 1959 about a wild mustang that absolutely will not be tamed. So if you love Spirit, you will love this film! --> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0127038/
Also, you should take a look at this documentary/educational film made by Monty Roberts -> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0472232/
By the way, my biggest tip is that you should definetly look up old westerns from the 1940's to the 1950's. There are lots and lots of movies about the special companionships between horse and cowboy, since a lot of these movies are supposed to show the "old west" when the horse was of big importance for humans. Some titles I can think of right know is Wild Horse Stampede (1943), The Golden Stallion (1949), Phantom Stallion (1954), Konga, the wild stallion (1940), Wild Horse Valley (1940) and last but not least "King of the Stallions" from 1942 about the wild stallion Nakoma!
Too bad most of these movies are really hard to find...
