Favourite horse film?

I have so many horse movies you would not believe! I've got

Black Beauty
Spirit
Young Black Stallion
Big Spender (racing film)
Seabiscuit
The little unicorn
Another Black Beauty film!
Racing Stripes
Running Free
Horse whisperer.

I can never decide which one to watch! Spirit is a great horse film but I prefer Black Beauty. What's your favourite horse film?

reply

running free is pretty good

"hey howdy hey! thats me on a yoyo!"

reply

I forgot about that film!!

reply

What about the Silver Brumby or King of the Wild Brumbies, whichever. Also has anyone ever seen the movie Nico about the unicorn it was pretty good too.

reply

No sorry I've never seen any of those. I've had a look for them but no luck.

reply

I would add "The Man from Snowy River"

reply

Flash is really good too!

reply

I want to see that! Do you know where I can buy it?

Spirit is a great movie but I would also recommend:

* Black Beauty (1994)-> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109279/

* Black Beauty (1971) -> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066834/

* The Horse Whisperer -> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119314/

* Flicka -> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0434215/

* Misty, a great movie based on the book about the pony Misty from Chincoteague Island --> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055186/

* Cattle Annie and Little Britches, a film from 1981. It's not really about horses but there's a lot of horses in the movie which is about 2 young girls joining a gang of bandits. Look it up here ---> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082145/

* The Horse with the flying tail, this is actually a Disney documentary from 1960. It's about a Palomino stock horse named Nautical who eventually becomes a showjumping champion. I haven't seen it in ages and I hope to find it on VHS or DVD someday soon. --> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054993/

* The Strawberry Roan, this is an old western from 1948 (which means it's in black and white). It's about a young boy getting paralyzed after being bucked of a strawberry roan-coloured wild horse. The main character helps the horse escape death and eventually trains the horse so he can go back and help the paralyzed boy to get over his trauma. Great movie!! --> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0040840/

*Mustang!, a western from 1959 about a wild mustang that absolutely will not be tamed. So if you love Spirit, you will love this film! --> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0127038/

Also, you should take a look at this documentary/educational film made by Monty Roberts -> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0472232/

By the way, my biggest tip is that you should definetly look up old westerns from the 1940's to the 1950's. There are lots and lots of movies about the special companionships between horse and cowboy, since a lot of these movies are supposed to show the "old west" when the horse was of big importance for humans. Some titles I can think of right know is Wild Horse Stampede (1943), The Golden Stallion (1949), Phantom Stallion (1954), Konga, the wild stallion (1940), Wild Horse Valley (1940) and last but not least "King of the Stallions" from 1942 about the wild stallion Nakoma!

Too bad most of these movies are really hard to find...

I remember The Silver Stallion: King of the Wild Brumbies (Parents Choice Award)
(1993)
Starring: Caroline Goodall, Russell Crowe Director: John Tatoulis . a very good film.

My other favorites are-
National Velvet,Walt Disney's Cristobolito The Calypso Colt(which is a beautiful Palomino,gaited,Paso Fino),Walt Disney's Justin Morgan Had A Horse,and Walt Disney's Tonka. I am able to borrow the last 2 on VHS from my library,(they are much too costly to buy)but I don't believe Cristo Bolito has ever been available.

I also love the part of the comedy-western of Rustler's Rhapsody where Tom Berenger makes his Palomino do some fancy dancing.

Nice! Love The Black Stallion (and the TV show was a guilty pleasure), Black Beauty, and The Man from Snowy River. I bought The Man From Snowy River as a twin pack with Flicka. The horses were cool, but the girl was highly annoying...

Do Australia and Lord of the Rings count as "horse" movies? I loved all the horses from LOTR, even the Nazgul's. If I had a spare 15K each when I'm a rich veterinary doctor in a few years (rich...yeah right!), I'd get a pair of Friesans and name them Nazgul and Destrier.

Last seen in theaters: Australia 7.5/10
Last rented: 3:10 to Yuma 9/10

Black Beauty (1994) is wonderful. Casey's Shadow is very good. Phar Lap is great. The Original My Friend Flicka and Thunderhead, Son of Flicka are both much better than the remake Flicka with Tim McGraw.
