his father shoots himself and police suddenly arrive in large numbers but yet jet li is just allowed to walk off without even having any police detain him yet alone speak to him after just coming out of the same room containing a dead man. right...

I thought the same thing. He'd be taken in for questioning and once at the station they'd realise he was wanted on an international arrest warrant. He'd be extradited back to Hong Kong.
