maybe the actors didn't want to kiss.. perhaps they didn't get along during the filming of the movie . But then again Jet Li did not kiss Mira Sorvino in the replacement killers.. And Mira's character wanted to kiss him so badly.
maybe it was Jet Li who didn't want to..

reply

I read an interview with Jet, containing 5 or 6 pages. He never kisses his female actors because he gets nervous and then turns red.

Jet Li wasn't in the Replacement Killers. It was Chow-Yun Fat.

reply

It's Chow Yun Fat not Jet Lei in the Replacement Killers.

it´s true about the age difference ,,,but they don´t look they´re 20 years apart, jet li looks younger

reply

I kind of had the impression Jet Li may have been playing a little younger in this film.

I agree here. Jet looked 27. Although, at this time he has aged a lot. Damn, how the hell did that happen.

Plus I think the people making the film felt that a kissing scene between an almost 40 year old male and a 21 year old female would just not look right. I think the movie was fine without the kissing scene.

Jet Li was only 36 when this premiered and like a lot of asians looked a lot younger than his actual age. The romance in this movie was a joke, they treated Li's character like he was her little brother (friend). The only thing "the people making the film" felt would not look right was an asian man as a actual romantic figure/love interest and basically said lets just stick to the usual kung fu stuff. I guess romeo must die just seemed like a catchy title, because there was no romance and this was no modern day romeo and juliet (some lame similarities yes, the biggest aspect however, again the romance, was omitted).

I did enjoy the film to some degree, but was just hoping they would portray asian men in a more positive light other than martial arts.

I wonder how people felt back in 1975 when the movie The Wilby Conspiracy was brought out. In that movie, Sidney Poitier (Afro-American) and Persis Khambetta (Indian) were kissing each other and did some other sexual activity in the European version of the movie. He was 48 years old, and she was 24 years old. Nowadays, they have shown the kissing and sex scene of that movie on American TV and have it on the DVDs and VHSs that are sold in the USA.

Got it correct gygibo. Jet Li didnt think it was appropriate since Aliyah was much younger than him and he was worried her fan base would be offended. Since most of the kids assumed she was still a teenager.

that is one big copout by hollywood. there are tons of a-list white male leads slobbering all over their younger co-stars. nic cage (43) made out with jessica biel (24) in recent film 'next', and they showed their affection very liberally throughout the film. i'll do you one better, bill murray (53) kissed scarlett johansson (19!) at the end of 'lost in translation' and critics raved over this final scene. but if it were an asian man it would be soooo wrong somehow and worry about the young girl's fanbase? give me a break. please don't try to defend these biased, closet lolita-lovin' white hypocrites.

Yeah, that's what I would of thought to..about the wife...lol...I think he should of kissed her but not at the end..or at least they should of almost have kissed in the middle of the movie..but got interupted...haha...and someone mentioned the age thing...not a big difference compared to some movies I have seen....lol.......but it doesn't bug me cuz these people look older...and its acting....haha...

I think it worked great without the kiss. It made the relationship more passionate because you always wondered. It's like when you kiss a really hot guy, you dream about how great it'll be when you kiss them, and then the kiss come and then it's like 'now what?' A kiss is usually a bitter sweet finale that no longer keeps you guessing. A kissless romance defintely stroked their fire.

nah! Aaliyah and Jet Li had a great time filming RMD. Infact, she loved asian people and wasnt the racist type. They became good friends whilst making this film.
From what I've heard, they did shoot a scene but decided not to put it in. I reckon it was nice to leave it out, you know, it'll really leave the audience imagining where their relationship will go after all that fighting and killings. Because in the movie, they didnt have enough time to be romantic and show affection towards another due to all the deadly rivalry.

reply

Like many above me have said, they did film a kiss, but they didn't include it because the producers thought it would be more "sweet" to have them not kiss. I dunno, you go figure it out.

reply

I liked the first kiss of the movie!!! ;)

Loved it

it's simple hollywood racism. i just caught a documentary on PBS titled "Slanted Screen". it details asian american male actors in hollywood. i highly recommend people to go see it. the piece shows how to this day asian males are still typecast, desexualized, and stereotyped in american movies. it cited this film as an example as how in a hollywood film the asian lead almost never gets the girl. "supposedly" they filmed a scene where they kissed but it tested badly. IT'S ROMEO AND JULIET! how can it be romeo and juliet w/ no kiss?

He gave two interviews saying that he'd made a vow to his wife that he 'would not' ever (whose to say if he'll change his mind at some point in time.) do an on screen kiss with his leading actress, so I wasn't surpised that he hasn't kissed any of them 'yet'.

The 'shyness' issue came up later in the conversation, as he's stated in the past he's extremely shy, does turn red (even when the subject is brought up) and does not consider himself to be a leading man, so those 'kisses' are definitely out.

Regarding African-American/Asian relations. I once had a Black roommate whose boyfriend was of Filipino descent. I was a little shocked since I had only seen Asian women date other ethnic groups. I think they got married but I am not sure . Does anyone else have stories?

i'm pretty sure when brad pitt smooches (if not a full blown sex scene) with some young up and comer onscreen, it doesn't make him less of a devoted husband. it's called acting. asian men and their so-called "notorious shyness" is a just a cop-out by hollywood to avoid portraying asian men as romantic interests. quit putting the blame on jet li, there was never any real romance written in the script, maybe at first but quickly scrapped so that they could just stick with the usual "kung-fu stuff".

jackie chan also supposedly "supports" his asexual image wholeheartedly, because too many dang asian women were taking their own lives at the thought of him having an onscreen relationship or even being a normal human being with a wife and kids...oh yes hollywood actually has a reason for portraying him as a virgin in every flick, it apparently saves lives!

ooook...i guess that makes sense (not). this is probably also why chan doesn't mind all the cheap stereotypical racist shots he takes from those crappy rush hour films. whatever hollywood wants to portray him as, thats what he'll do. his justification of hollywood's never-ending racism against asian men with something as ridiculous as that speaks for itself.

reply

I have to agree with you. I don't think anyone would be offended by Jet Li kissing Aaliyah because she was almost the same color as Jet Li. He wants to stay married. Come on look what happened to Brad Pitt & Jennifer Aniston when he acted with Angelina Jolie.

I don't even consider their romance a romance.

Clark's destiny = Superman, Lex Luthor & Lois Lane.

reply

I thought they were somewhat in a relationship towards the end. Maybe they were just good friends. That would have been nice if they had a kissing scene.
