One thing I need explaining please: Why did he break his promise to her?

A little advice. You might get a reply to your question if you clarified your use of pronouns and fleshed out your nouns.
"Why did he break his promise to her?"
Why did he (who?) break his (whose?) promise (which promise?) to her (to whom?)?
For example:
Why did Hitler break his promise to Lord Chamberlain not to invade Poland?
- or -
Why did Ben break his promise never to break up with JLo?
The point is, just because you know what's in your mind doesn't mean you communicate it to others when you ask such a vague question. I just finished watching the movie, so if you ask again maybe I can help with the answer.
