Similarities with 'On the Waterfront'

By chance I watched these two films around the same time.
Noticed several similarities.
I'm not sure if you could call it homage, perhaps just coincidence, but they're there.

For example:

-Ghost Dog's Pigeon friends are massacred, as are Terry's in "Waterfront"

-Both films involve the Mafia (this one's a little weak)

-Both main characters have friendships with kids.

Anyways. Thought that was fun. What do you think?

On the Waterfront' is a superior film.
While I'd be the first to admit that I don't see many movies featuring pigeons.
