Why the name Ghost Dog?

Ghost dog ...yeah that's the one

Duh. He obviously typed his name into this...

One could only speculate really, but this is my general idea about it!

African American people seem to call each other "dog" because of cultural reasons, why that is so I do not know and I can't find any information about it either. We could assume simply because he's black.

He's called "Ghost" because as a hitman he's in and out without anyone seeing him.

Some of the people in the street greeted him as Ghost Dog(about 22min in, outside the Birdland and Electrical store), which would infer to them knowing about who he is(more likely who he were in his past, rather than what he is now) and simply paid their respects. In the park he got greeted as only "Dog". Still it's assumed that he only got one friend and the others are more of acquaintances.

It could also be that he's lonely/a loner and hence he's called "Ghost".

Many questions are unanswered in this movie, maybe that's a part of viewing it, to make spectators form their own conclusions.
