I guess I was troubled by his digging the "plot" in the garden and coming across something holding either a photo or money when the proselytizers showed up. Did he kill his mother as well? Or was she just buried on the land to be kept close by? Or was that object he found the belongings of one of the lost girls?
That bit had me wondering as well.
i dont think it is told how his mother dies, but I think that what he finds when hes digging the plot is that wallet that he stole from when he was a boy and his mother was filming her show.

In the flashback you see young Joey rifling through the wallet to ascertain how much money is in there and you can clearly see at this point the religious medallion attached to the inside front cover, this medallion is a giveaway when old Joey rediscovers the wallet in Felicia's intended plot.
