I thought this was an excellent film. Bob Hoskins gives one the best
performances I've seen as a slightly odd, lonely catering manager,
with dark secrets. He befriends the innocent Felicia, an Irish girl
looking for her boyfriend. Egoyan develops the story with some
subtlety, as well as some nice touches of black humour. There are a
few points where the script becomes a little too obvious, but in the
main it works very well.

Recommended.

Highly watchable, if only for Hoskins' hilarious Brummie accent. Although the rest of the film is above marvellous as well.

Yes, i thought it was a really good movie. It's one of those ones that you can watch over and over again, at least for me. Elaine and Bob played their characters wonderfully, which made it very enjoyable to watch. I highly recommend it.

Bob Hoskins' performance was terrific and reminded quite a lot of Richard Attenborough's role as John Christie in "10 Rillington Place", which itself was brilliant.

"Kids, you tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is, never try."

Richard Attenborough in "10 Rillington Place" scared me for years. I still get goosebumps thinking about it.

I'm sure Bob Hoskins admires it. One of the great acting performances on film.

Great film, and I haven't seen much of Atom's work, but I think that Steve over at the NYTimes review is a bit misguided in claiming Atom to be the best Canadian director. Cronenberg, anyone?

Well and hey, what's "best." I love both of these cats, Atom and Davie, and I think it's foolish to consider best-isms when it comes to film, or works of art of any ilk. Too much -- too different.

Ps. slarsson, can you post a link to that article, ' case I don't find it.

This is the type of movie you think about a lot after it's over and might want to watch again for all the little things and symbolism you probably missed. There is a lot of religious overtones in the movie now that it's over and I'm pondering it.
