Is Hilditch's flashback of going to the opera as a boy with his mother to watch the play a hint of incest between the two? Throwing up the liver in the stuffing may be of psychological significance as well.

I haven't seen it in a long time, but it always seemed like they were hinting at that very strongly, but in such an obtuse, sideways way that I was never sure that's even what we were supposed to think. That John the Baptist link is a good find, interesting stuff.

Edit: I haven't read the book, but according to another post on this board, the incest angle is made explicit in the book.
