Why was Hilditch so concerned (as he said he was) that Felicia should have an abortion before he kills her? What is the key difference between terminating the foetus and then her, and terminating her and thereby the foetus at the same time?

I suppose he felt like she made the decision to terminate so that shifted the guilt away from him if he took both of them.
