Is it really funny when sitcom wives are physically abusive???

I just saw a scene that I had forgotten about. It was a scene where she physically hurt Doug and told him to come in for Arthur's birthday cake. She grabbed his cheeks really hard. He could barely talk. It made me think about the numerous times where she punched him in the stomach, literally started whooping his ass in front of Major, multiple titty twisters, ect. If it was the other way around and Doug was hurting her, it wouldn't even be a comedy and prob wouldn't have made it 9 seasons.

I never thought it was funny. Not in most instances anyway. Especially the Major incident, that's the kind of thing people — men and women — can get arrested for (i.e., my old neighbors).

reply

Agreed, Very funny indeed!

Didn't you know? It's only abuse if the MAN does it. Society has proven that time and time again. Man-on-woman violence is condemned and the guy is an @$$hole, but if the woman beats or abuses the man, like Carrie did to Doug and Debra sometimes did to Ray, it's "funny" and "entertaining" and society just accepts it. Especially the way American network TV has portrayed woman-on-man violence throughout the decades. And now with the whole SJW feminazi thing going on now, women are encouraged to "fight back" against men and assault them if they feel it's necessary, or sometimes, just for the hell of it. This is what it's come to. This is what we have become. And I wish it were not so. SMDH.

I do see cops arresting women when they attend domestics and men have visible injuries, on COPS..

and 'mutual combat" and stuff, everyone gets brought in..

I never found those bits funny. I agree they would never do this with the man hurting--in a small way--the woman. I think the writers were a bit lazy and figured some cheap violent humor would carry the show along. As funny as big parts of this series were, these abuse/hurting scenes were among the many faults it had.

Why don't we just shoot 'em down and be through with it?

reply

I totally agree that it's not funny at all. I just watched the episode where they went out to dinner for their 10th anniversary and Carrie sprayed Doug in the eyes with hairspray. She was downright mean.

I don't know any couples who are physically abusive to each other, even the occasional slap or twist. So, it's not difficult for me to consider this a fantasy piece played by actors. I think they use this form of humor to go along with Carrie's 'strong personality in a small package' type of behavior. There is a lot of stereotype in the show. Overall I do find it a funny show and like to watch.

Totally agree. Ridiculous double standard. Elaine did it too in Seinfeld.

When did Elaine hit her boyfriends?

I know that she liked to push people, but that wasn't a gender thing. It was just something she did and she got away with it, because of her strength and stature. When she pushed bizarro Jerry and he fell, that was obviously a shock for her.

she does pretty often assault George and Kramer..I'm not sure if she roughed up any actual boyfriends, maybe not even Puddy, but she got into a mutual combat with George's screaming father one night and apparently got the best of it, we did not see it, apart from the freeze-frame in mid-roundohouse by her, and the aftermath, where she gloated about victory..

Do not watch Everybody Loves Raymond. Woman on Man violence is their staple.

If it was just punching him semi-hard on the arm it would be okay. People do that, and it's more symbolic than abusive. But she really seems to try to hurt him with nipple twists, punches in the gut, etc. It's actual assault, and it's kind of odd.
