First ever credible Dutch accent

I'm Dutch and I have to say that David Wenham is the first-ever English-speaking actor I've seen who fakes a credible Dutch accent (for those who don't know, in Belgium (Flanders), they also speak Dutch). All credits to him!

Thanks Geeronimo! I am always impressed with David`s accents - he`s very good at them!

Credit has to be given to an Australian, filming in Hawaii, speaking English with a Flemish Accent! I`m sure he went to great pains to ensure it was as authentic as possible!

there`s one bit in the film though when he gives his confession in French - what do you think of that bit? A friend suggested the other day that it wasn`t him and may have been dubbed but I thought it just sounded different cos he was shouting.

I know a lot of the dialogue was re-done after due to noise on the island (the wind, the sea etc) but it never crossed my mind that it might have been someone else doing that bit!

What do you think?

reply

Well, to be honest it has been quite some time since I saw this, so I don't remember. But if I come to see it again, I'll pay special attention to the French part. At this point though, I really don't know.

reply

I thought he just sounded different because he was shouting slightly or because when you`re speaking a foreign language you invariably don`t sound like yourself but I could be wrong!

I agree on the Dutch accent. I myself am Dutch and I was sure it would annoy me to no end, but I was heavily impressed. He had the 'u' in 'but' down perfectly.

He must've listened to Ruud Lubbers a lot

as for the french part, i too believed it was dubbed but one can not tell for sure
maybe it was the shouting

While I have yet to see this movie,I've heard good reports about it. I'm interested in another film about Father Damien, a short movie in colour made in the 1940s,I think. It starred Tom Neal as the priest in a convincing performance. For Neal, it was casting out of type; he usually played tough guy roles and, indeed, in his personal life was a very tough customer who ended up going to jail for killing his wife. Does anyone know anything about that particular movie, Michael, Galway, Ireland

Which sounds quite different from a dutch one.

I guess he had help from the Flemish members of the cast (I counted at least three).
