Couldn't stand the Otis character

He was arrogant and he was extremely jealous of David Ruffin. After all, David and Eddie are the heart of the group (notice how even Eddie supported David).

reply

How the *beep* was David the heart of the group? He only sang for a couple of years and he was rude, missing rehearsals and generally *beep* up the band within.

reply

Say whatever you want to say, most people remember David Ruffin first! He gave them great hits. And who is the rude one with your littering of curse words in your post? Wash your mouth.

reply

Excuse me? You weren't the one I called rude in the first place.

"He gave them great hits"

No, I believe that was the songwriters that did.

reply

I just did not like otis and blue being portrayed as perfect angels.

That guy came to us for help, and we lit him on fire!

reply

Ruffin was THE MAN. Although, like many exceptionally talented artists, he had drug-abuse issues and success did go a bit to his head, Ruff was still one of R&B's most talented vocalists, which was the reason why most of the Temps' records became hits during the 60s. It's just a shame that his head wasn't together.

In the movie after David died, Otis put it best, "All I can say is that it was a tragic loss."

reply

Otis is no angel, even the film acknowledged he cheated on his wife, but that doesn't change the fact that David Ruffin, for all his undeniable talent, ultimately self-destructed from his drug and ego issues.

I've got sunshine on a cloudy day.
When it's cold outside, I've got the month of May.
I guess you'd say what can make me feel this way
Cocaine, cocaine, talking bout cocaine!

reply

True. But the sad reality is that self-destruction from drug abuse is common with a lot of exceptional talents--Jimi Hendrix, Charlie Parker, Sly Stone, Billie Holiday, Richard Pryor, and if she doesn't get her act together, Whitney Houston will most likely join the list.

reply

OMG, Sparky - look what you wrote in 2010 about Whitney Houston! I know this is not an active thread, but your were so right. Sad to say. There was so much talent here...

reply

Yeah. I posted that comment a couple of weeks after I saw a clip of Whitney delivering that absolutely dreadful performance in Europe where she was singing off-key and speaking incoherently on stage. She was obviously under the influence of drugs.

The history of brilliant artists succumbing to drugs is just so extensive that you need not be a psychic to see that when an artist starts to act erratically from drug abuse, like Whitney did, he/she will soon meet an unfortunate fate.

But I wish I had been wrong.

reply

Yep Sparky, Whitney did join the list. You were so right!! R.I.P Whitney, I will always love you!

I have to give Otis Williams some credit for keeping The Tempts going through some very tough times. But David Ruffin was the TALENT. I don't think Otis sang lead on any hit songs. And I think he became more dictatorial as time went on. According to Richard Street's own website, he left the group after the "family feeling" of the Temptations deteriorated. In 1993 Street entered the hospital to have seventeen kidney stones removed. Otis Williams was not informed of Street's condition, and angrily called Street, demanding to know why he missed his last performance. Street felt that Williams seemed to show a lack of concern, and decided to move on. Street died on February 27, 2013 of a pulmonary embolism. His death occurred nine days after fellow former Temptation Damon Harris's death. There really seems to be a curse on The Tempts.
