In the beginning when they are in front of the high school, and they see a guy in a flashy car. They say
" he thinks he's so great because he got a record deal"

Was he anyone in particular or just a fictional character?

That was Lamont Dozier, of the songwriting and production team 'Holland-Dozier-Holland', who brought us much of what we know as 'the Motown Sound'. He was about to become a pretty big deal!
