Possibly the most underrated film ever made. Dissmissed by film goers and critics alike, this film stands as a giant among it's genre. The acting is flawless and so is the writing. The ending couldn't be better, a classic tragedy for all sorts of reasons.
I totally agree with you, and it may turn out to be a classic in years to come. It needs time to ripen with future audiences, and it grows in stature the more one sees it. I wish the French film it was based on, "Garde a Vue", was available with subtitles, as my French is nowhere near good enough to appreciate the subtleties of a film with so much talk, without subtitles. The book's pretty good too - "Brainwash".
“Nobody’s winning. One side’s just losing slower than the other.”
Grossly underrated. But the writing was alittle corny at times, especially Jane's detective character (actually, a fan of Thomas Jane, but he was pretty bad in this movie, nothing close to his performance in The Stander).
Maybe useless to agree but it indeed is, heavily. I just can't figure why there are even people rating this below 5. I mean you may like the style or not, the subject or not, but you have to be nearly blind and deaf to rate it like that, unbelievable. This goes beyond taste, beyond being able to properly judge a movie. And what's more, mature people rate it even less than teenagers. This goes beyond my ability to understand... It must be the subject that is somehow frightening or repulsive, almost touchable as something lurking in the dark of our subconcious. Be it Henry's thoughts and wishes or Chantal's jealousy or Victor's eagerness to condemn someone for his conviction, blind to reason. A masterpiece.
The problem is just many people are rating movies either very good or very bad. I don't think this movie is very great, but I definitely wouldn't rate it below a 5. But when you look at the ratings of The Godfather and you see 6.3% has rated the movie a 1, you know some people just give a 1 if they don't like a movie, while a 1 is only a good rating, if you think the movie is one of the worst movies ever made. And I seriously can't imagine one on every 16 people thinks The Godfather is one of the worst movies ever. It obviously effects the rating of a movie. I also can't imagine 12.6% of the people think Spice World is one of the best movies ever. People just need to learn to use 1-10 rate and not 1 or 10 rate...
Yes,totally underrated!!!This is how thriller/crime movie shuld be!All the time I was just staring, there was no possible theory that something could drag me away from this movie!Even Monica Bellucci was excellent,I thought she's just making good nude scenes ha ha
Absolutely, it was a great flick that leaves you thinking after it is over. Two top named, top notch actors, and I give Morgan Freeman big kudos for his role as lead detective. Hell, I would have confessed anything to the guy :)
I remember seeing this movie for the first time in college. My psych professor used it as an example for a subject. After watching it I could not believe I nor anyone else in the classroom had ever heard about it. This movie is grossly underrated. The acting is great and the scenes are directed and produced well, I guess the only people who knew this movie was great were Hackman and Freeman after reading the script.
Grossly Underrated, Highly Recommended to anyone who hasn't seen it.
