M.E.M.'s Singing

I was really surprised how beautifully she sang her songs.
I have played the soundtrack for people and asked them to guess who is singing, when I tell them they are surprised.

reply

Yeah she sang all her songs beautifully. She has a great country-folk voice, a bit like Emmylou Harris maybe. I especially liked her version of Richard and Linda Thompson's "Dimming of the Day".

reply

That song is the only reason I have kept my copy of the film.

reply

She has done a number of stage musicals on Broadway, mostly in the beginning of her career, including Maria in a WEST SIDE STORY revival, THE HUMAN COMEDY, and recently (though still several years ago) as the female lead in the Broadway revival of MAN OF LA MANCHA.

Personally, thought her voice could peel paint..when she wasn't singing flat, the harsh reediness of her voice made the fillings in my teeth cry out in protest. She's a fine actress, but sounds like Jennifer Warnes..minus the talent. There are singers who have bad pitch but have musicality,or prescence,or whatever you'd like to call it,and Ms. Mastrantonio can act,but I thought they should have voiced over her part.John Sayles, being the naturalistic & down-to-earth humanist that he is,decided not to..that might have played a part in why this film flopped so badly...anyhow,no offense, ladies,& God bless!

reply

tone should change his handle because he lacks a sense of it. No offense.
As with most audience members, I had no idea she had been a Broadway actress and could sing rather nicely. I recall her first coming into the film scene in, what was it, "The Abyss". Far cry from Broadway.

reply

I thought she did a good job. As someone else already said the dimming of the day cover was impressive.

I have a feeling a lot of people don't know what "flat" means, musically, but they like to throw the term around to sound superior. They hear American Idol judges use the phrase and they think they've guessed what it means so they like to condemn singers with the word, even though the concept of pitch is usually foreign to them. Whenever I hear some know-it-all condemning a perfectly pitched performance as being flat, I laugh.

Movies are IQ tests; the IMDB boards are how people broadcast their score.

reply

I think viewers are overlooking the fact that she's an itinerant singer, basically working a 9 to 5. She sings for her supper not to land on a Rolling Stone cover. She also sings to soothe her soul, and that she did mine.

reply

okay, withering. good point. i had no problem with her singing.

reply

Indeed. She sang well. Probably better than many professional singers. But as the character points out, catching on is a matter of luck, as many famous singers sing rather badly but have been luckly enough to find an audience.

reply

She was ok, nothing incredible or jaw-dropping though.

I am 5 minutes into this and I came to IMDB to see if anyone else agrees she is terrible. I guess you don't agree but glad some do.

Have you ever heard Mare Winningham sing? Another very fine actress with a great set of pipes. Go on YouTube, listen to her rendition of ' Hard Times ' and let me know what you think.

Yes, not bad.
