I think they were coming back to kill them, kris kristoferson waited to long to save these people. Since the two men had a history, that is how i base my conclusion. What do you think?

No. The second plane was larger than the first. There's no reason for that if all they intended was to kill them. If the intent was to kill them, they would have returned with Kris' plane and a trigger man, nothing else.

They still could have brought them back to later kill them. I don't know, just a thought.

who ever it was it wasnt Kris. If you notice the front of his plane and the other one at the end is very different.
