Why so much hate over the Spino T. Rex fight

I for one enjoyed the hell out of that sequence and the movie as a whole. I don't understand why people hated the Rex being killed off by a bigger dinosaur it makes a lot of sense. There is a lot of evidence to suggest that T. Rex may not have really been the the biggest meanest king of the dinosaurs that most of had thought at the time of the first JP. Anyway i liked that scene and i like the Spino more than the Rex and i hope they bring him back in Jurassic World.

It's because many people were always fans of the T. rex and also because Spino's jaws were made to catch fish and eat small dinos while T. rex had much stronger and bigger jaws.

reply

Well i admit Rex bites are probably the one of most formidable of the dinosaurs the Spino jaws are not unlike that of crocodile in the sense they are meant to hold and never let go and have a lot of force behind them , and I have also learned that Spino was the largest carnivorous dinosaur ever and had quite a bit of a size advantage over the Rex and its jaws may have been equally formidable so it killing the Rex is not that far fetched. Now if its a matter of people just loving the Rex and hated seeing it die i could understand that, but anyone who says its preposterous, inaccurate, and would never happen that is just not a factual statement to make.

reply

It's teeth were designed for killing fish. TRexs jaws were designed to crush bones and rip off more than 100 lbs of meat in a single bite.

People have known there were bigger meat eaters then the T-Rex for decades. It just wasn't shown on film until 2001.

Ever play Dino Crisis 2? A Giganotosaurus kills a T Rex in it.

Hahaha so glad you posted this. I love 1&2 and definitely remember that part.

So what? That has nothing to do with JP.

I was glad they brought something new in. Adding a second T-Rex didn't up the ante at all for TLW so they needed something that would actually be exciting to add.

Plus it makes it a lot more exciting for the Rex to come back for Jurassic World.

Because no one gives a damn about the goofy looking Spinosaurus. It's like the film makers thought "Ohh how cool and amazing he's even bigger! Thats what the JP fans want, a bigger and better baddie, not a good story or solid characters, and certainly not the triumphant return of everyone favorite dinosaur! Great, Spino it is! Start building the models and we'll finish the script later once we start shooting"...so we're forced upon this new lame looking "Super T-Rex!" no one really cared about, instead of the all-time classic, endlessly menacing T-Rex we've all grown up as believing to be the king of all dinosaurs and ultimate predator (sure, he's not the biggest, but certainly the most badass).

The Rex was never not fearsome and fascinating, but unlike evil "I'm gonna chase these puny humans all over like a nonsensical horror movie villain/stalker despite just killing a Rex and having food for days" Spinosaurus, the Rex was never evil, he was almost an anti-hero...saving the day in JP1 and in most cases causing havoc to protect its youth. While sure if humans were around it tended to attack/chase them (likely for food), but it didn't just appear in every scene to stalk the characters around every corner...and it sure as hell never lamely got defeated to be unheard from again by a freaking flare gun.

So yeah Spino was bigger, and odder looking, but ultimately a goofy dinosaur that didn't look 1/3 as menacing and fearsome as the Rex. And despite the fact that unlike the Rex, Spino was shown to be more Terminator like in its relentless attack of such insignificant prey, it's still never feels like half the threat of the Rex. When the T Rex first appeared between the jeeps it was genuinely terrifying and it's attack on Lex and Tim was genuinely suspenseful and intense...Spino never came across that way in one scene. Heck since I mentioned the Rex between the jeeps, let's just compare their buildups/entrances and how lame Spinos was in comparison. The Rex is ominously shaking the ground, rippling the water and spitting out a limb onto the tour car, or slowly shaking the trees as they approach the scene... The Spino gives us a "bigger" roar from a distance (ridiculous guess from Grant) that isn't a 1/100th as cool as the Tex's blare, then conveniently bursts through the trees at the perfect time and place to eat that dude and derail the plane (which goes quite a distance before eventually crash lands and lo and behold who's to be there already but the Spino). And the Rex reveals always have proper build up teasing us before by taking a good hour or more to fully show, making the pay off huge. The mystery of the Spin is over in like 15 minutes. It takes away any intrigue of the new dinosaur whatsoever.

And ultimately I have no problem bringing in another, bigger villain then the Rex, but at least give us a final showdown and, not dispose of the audiences favorite dinosaur within 10 minutes of them being in the jungle. It's just insulting to send the series and immediately turns people off, making us just dislike the spinal even more. And not the good kind of dislike you get with great baddies, the kind of dislike that's like "why is this clown on my screen instead of the mothereffing KING?"

Long story short, Spinosaurus - while not an inherently terrible choice to include in the film - ultimately could never take the place of the T Rex, and killing the Rex is a travesty, not to mention how it was so utterly ineptly displayed and gave us pretty much zero Rex screen time. So yeah, just everything about the whole Rex/Spino situation was/is terrible, and that extends to - as I explained above in detail - the Spinos portrayal in general. The one good thing is we got his lame ass out of the way and the Rex's return will be more glorious than ever.

The producers may have thought that the T-Rex had enough exposition in the previous film (particularly towards the end) that they needed something fresh.

reply

Excellent rebuttal of anyone thinking the Spino was a good idea. I hate it. I hate that they got rid of the iconic dinosaur in favor of trying to shove a newer, cooler and meaner dinosaur down our throats. This video really says it quite perfectly:

He speaks directly at this travesty of a script at around 10:20. A must see.

That is awesome!! Thanks

i completely disagree... people are just obssessed with tyrannasaurus rex.

It would have been awesmoe to see herbivores infected with some sort of poison that caused them to go wild and become extremely agggressive...

I much rather would have enjoyed that over more t-rexes and t-rex like dinosaurs.

reply

because the t rex was pretty much established as the main hero of the first movie and became so loved by fans as an arguably more interesting character than some of the people in the movies.

reply

I didn't give a crap that they brought in a bigger dinosaur. In fact, I welcomed it. The Spino was the thing I was most excited about before the film came out.

I also didn't give a crap and scientific accuracy.

I'm not even all that mad they killed the Rex in general.

What I am mad about was the crass, forced and rushed way they killed the Rex. Execution is everything. Like it or not, The Rex is the series mascot-the dinosaur that everybody loves and is attached to. So to bring it in and then not even 60 seconds later break it's neck unceremoniously is the epitome of an insult. It smacked of "Yea! Move over Rex! We have a bigger and badder guy in town!"

If say, the Rex fought the Spino in a way that inadvertently helped the protags like in the first film, or if the Spino and Rex had some kind of territorial despute through the film-then killing him woul probably sit fine with me. I can't speak for others, but if it was treated with more respect I would have been fine with it.

reply

It would have been more respectful if the movie just didn't have T.Rex at all.

I didn't mind Spino won, but I wish the fight would have lasted longer.
