Why was Richie such a tool?

Why did he suddenly start speaking in a British accent to people he knew his whole life? Talk about lame.

Movie would have been so much better if Richie was just a regular guy.

The whole point was that he became a total rock fan, British rock bands to be exact, that he wanted to emulate their style. That's my guess.

All I need is one mic...

reply

Agreed. It was so...... Awful.

Hated that... Like who does that I don't care if it was in the late 70's???

Lol

Become a KISS fan or a Bee Gees fan.

He wanted to be someone else. He wanted the punk lifestyle and wanted to believe he was a rock star. It was a persona. An escape.

Most people in their 20s act like tools to an extent. Richie had probably spent his whole life feeling like an outsider and unable to fully conform to the repressive, traditional Bronx Italian-American working-class neighborhood he grew up in. He goes to England and sees the punk scene and, as it was for loads of kids and young adults on both sides of the Atlantic, was totally blown away and adopted every aspect of it like a zealous convert. He probably had an overactive imagination and got really excited and even wanted to sound like a London punk.

Yes, it was silly and tool-ish in a way but hell, the other guys in the neighborhood weren't tools? Vinnie is an insecure weasel and his buddies are arrogant, macho poseurs who like disco music and embody every bad *beep* cliche. Richie is at least sympathetic because he had to grow up with these clowns.

reply

yeh, like all the others weren't tools themselves. the way they spoke to the girl and they way they treated the junkie....

And haning out at the end of a dead end street everyday....yeh, no tools here.

Swing away, Merrill....Merrill, swing away...

reply

Richie was just trying to have some fun and break away from that pack.

Geez can you blame him?

That group of idiots from the neighborhood absolutely takes the cake when it comes to the stereotypical portrayal of the East Coast Guido.

My god, I wouldn't spend 5 seconds around cement heads like that.

reply

Richie was a "conflicted individual"....and in a way, that's what made him more interesting. Because, had he been portrayed as just an average boring guy, who would even want to watch him?

DreamsAgain -- THANK YOU! I love Richie. He wasn't a tool, he was conflicted. Also he was a harbinger of the death of disco. Everyone is afraid of something that is different.

reply

I think he was meant to personify the rise of punk rock, not the 'death of disco'. In 1977, both musical genres were on the rise.
