Artificially inflates the then-new "punk" scene & fashions .........

Man- back then-- dressing "punk" was a bad choppy hair-cut , pale skin, zits, skinny black tie , black jacket , tight black pants a few safety pins and Pro-Keds sneakers.
This movie has 'em dressed like they all went and shopped at friggin' Vivian Westwoods high-end expensive boutique in London circa 1979 . Jesus- glad these "street" punks had lots of money and travel time. Also by this time "punk" was like an embryo just emerging. It was not an "explosion". And there were no rules on how to dress. Just look "messy and smelly".

Well, to be fair, Spike Lee is not punk. He probably just had a consultant tell him what's the "cool" punk look, and his wardrobe stylist brought all the obvious clothes to the set. He took what is considered to be the popular look.
