Different tone in the comic vs. movie

I felt a slightly different tone reading the comic. Someone pointed out that it was a bit harsher and maybe funnier and I agree. Both are good.

But I also noticed Enid seemed to be more "in the right", cooler, or more cutting in the comic. I think in the movie her young age and insecurity is a lot more apparent. The scene where she dye's her hair green is probably the best example. in the comic she seemed to have the upper hand in that scene, scornful and in the know, clearly the better one in that situation. In the movie scene she seems defensive, flustered and a little dorky, despite knowing what she's talking about.

I'm not complaining, I actually feel like the comic and movie pair really well together, you end up with this great spectrum of a character destroying people and being the cutting edge of originality but also being totally lost and a bit pathetic. kind of representing youth really well.

Before the boards close, a quick last recommendation: you might want to check out the "Daniel Clowes Reader" published by Fantagraphics Books. I haven't gotten through all of it, but there's some great insight about Clowes and his opinion on Gen'Xers. He has been quite critical of slackers and indie kids in his interviews and even in comics. Makes you see characters like Enid in a slightly different light.
