Two Scenes Were Added Before Release (SPOILERS)
I saw an early "sneak preview" of Cast Away in 2000. It was not quite finished.
When the movie came out a few weeks later, two scenes had been ADDED:
ONE: The scene of Helen Hunt getting the phone call and fainting, with the camera shifting to her husband and baby. (In the version I saw first, we first learned of the husband when he appeared at the airport to meet Hanks instead of the wife -- and we saw her crying outside.)
TWO: The scene near the end where Hanks talks to his friend -- in a long speech -- about how he survived by living day to day, breathing in and out, waiting to see what the tide would bring in (a porta potty wall that could be turned into a raft, as it turned out.)
These two scenes added emotion and meaning to the film. I don't know if they were originally shot, or re-shot for the film after the version I saw.
Also the version I saw had something taken OUT: a much longer sequence of the FedEx package getting from the wife in Texas to the husband in Russia.
