At the end, in the note he leaves with the package, he says it saved his life.

I don't get how. Did I miss something?

It gave him a reason to stay alive, so that he could deliver the package. He was a very dedicated FedEx employee. :)

It gave him purpose after he realised he could no longer be with his wife.

His "purpose in life" was to stay alive and deliver that package. Way before he realized he could not be with his wife.

More like a goal than a task i think.

Could also mean it was because of the wings on the package that gave him the idea for the port-a-potty "sail" and painting them on it. If it wasn't for that sail, he would have never made it off of the island on that raft.
