Fred/Illyria season 6

I've been re watching this show recently and it got me to thinking about Ilyria and what would have happened if we had gotten a sixth season. Basically I remembering reading about two very different directions they would have taken the character if there had been a season six (It's been a very long time so i don't remember the sources. Could have been in old issues of the Angel magazine, it could have been on a message board.)

1) Illyria would have spent more and more time 'impersonating' Fred for Wesley, to where the lines between the two characters become blurred in Wesley's mind. It would have been a very dark psychological story line, with Wesley accepting the lie even though he knows it's a illusion, because it means he can have Fred back in some shape or form.

2) Fred's soul would not have been destroyed by Illyria coming forth. Instead someone (possibly Willow)would have brought Fred back to life and separated the two characters, so we would have Fred and Illyria in Fred's form existing at the same time.

Can anyone conform both possible versions of what would happened to the character? I think the second version has shown up on some Buffyverse message boards. But has anyone else heard about the first one also?

That's what I always heard, the comics explain it much better.

We have Joss to blame for no Season 6, because he begged for early renewal.

He didn't beg for an early renewal. He asked if they were going to renew or not without having to wait until the last minute. This way, if they didn't, then his cast and crew could start looking for other job offers while they still had work.

2. Is the one I've heard most often. It would have been interesting for Fred and Illyria to split but inhabit the same body. It would be like in Yugioh, with yugi and the pharaoh. Also why couldn't they just go back in time and save Fred?

I don't think any of them had any time travel powers.

True, but I've noticed whedon's writing employs Macguffins and the characters fall into certain situations so they would have stumbled across a time travel spell or a time traveler eventually

But at that point in the series, the only time manipulating MacGuffin they had at their disposal was Illyria. And no way she would've helped with that mission.

That's an interesting direction they could have gone with the character. Develop Illyria's empathy to the point where she begins to care about Fred, someone whom she's never met, then maybe she's willing to let Fred cohabitate the body. It's one of the few directions they could have gone
