James Masters in credits

I've just hit season 5 of my first rematch in possibly 10 years, and a perculiar thing arose during the credits.

Now I recall from previously watching it that Spike returns, but I was still surprised to see Spike in the opening credits of the first episode.

If I was watching it for the first time, I'd be disappointed as I'd just be waiting all episode for the big reveal, rather than it coming out of no where.

Can someone tell me this wasn't always the way and it just happens that the copy I have has altered credits?

It was always like that.

Seize the moment, 'cause tomorrow you might be dead.

reply

Oh wow. Makes you wonder why they left the reveal to the last scene than.

reply

I'd say it was so they could focus on establishing the new dynamic of the show, i.e. Angel working for Wolfram and Hart, before having to worry about bringing Spike into the fold.

Seize the moment, 'cause tomorrow you might be dead.

reply

Sorry, I probably could have worded that better.

I guess I should say they should have stuck with the old credits, or just had a temporary one.

It ruins a lot of the surprise of when Spike does appear.

I remember it already being well-known Spike was going to return in 'Angel' before Season 5 went to air here in Australia so they didn't really spoil things for the viewers at the time.

May as well be the first to revive the Angel thread on this board.

I still think was a silly decision. I know someone on IMDB mentioned that "everyone in Aus already knew", but if you actively tried to avoid spoilers, it was a bit of a kick in the guts.

On the comment of focusing on the new dynamic... well, everyone would've just been waiting for Spike to appear.

It was discussed I think. For a while when Buffy ended many stars were mentioned as moving over. I think Nicholas Brandon was one of the first who wanted to cross over. Another was Dawn. I think Spike had the best link to his past and worked story wise.

I seem to remember all the trailers being "look who's back" basically
