Resident Evil 2 about child abuse!

I remember a long while back someone posted on this board with their interpretation on Resident Evil 2, saying how the game was essentially about child abuse!

The poster went into a discussion saying how Sherry is being abused by her father, William Birkins. Then one day he ‘does it’ to her (injecting the G-virus into her body). I guess you could say that she’s also somewhat neglected by her mother Annette.

Claire and Leon were like foster care workers who help save Sherry (creating an antidote for the virus) and also dispose of her father.

If the original poster still frequents this board (or anyone else who remembers this) then I’d love to know more. I just remember finding it a funny yet fascinating read!

It's just a game ffs. U don't see her getting abused or anything. lol

The game has several dark overtones, mostly concerning the dangers of technology and conformity. Also you can extract parental cruelty, I suppose. Child abuse is much more blatant in Silent Hill 2 however, in the character of Angela.

It was more child neglect than abuse. William and Annette were focused on their work than spending thier time with Sherry.

Neglect maybe, but Annette seemed to truly be sorry for how she had let Sherry down...Either way, it sucked for her.

I never noticed the whole subtext behind it.

I noticed the child neglect subtext, pretty cool I guess.

Or the guys just reading too much into it? You can tell from Sherrys conversations with Claire and any scene with Annette involving Sherry that she is neglected, there's no subtext at all.
