Don't understand why they destroyed the tape?

Why did the national security advisor destroy the tape if it shows the crowd firing, which would have justified Colonel Childers's actions? They should have given the tape to the media and vindicated the troops. Was it to save his own skin because he accussed Childers prematurely? Also the US is stronger than Yemen and if the Yemeni government covered up the fact that their people were attacking the embassy there should have been diplomatic consequences.

The quotes from the audio recording were taken from Osama bin Laden in the 90s, btw.

It was destroyed solely for the sake of creating a good plot. Sry, but that's all there is to it. No way would that have happen in reality.

OP:

Clearly you didn't follow it carefully.

In 1 of the conversations that guy Sokal had, he was saying how if Childers' let off the hook, that means the United States justifies the killing, it would mean sht. Here's the exact words from my subtitle:

General: I'll tell you|what we ought to get straight. We lost three|United States Marines.

Sokal: They lost 83!
Now, are we gonna go to war|with Yemen over it?
We're covering our ass all over|the Middle East right now, General.
Because of your man's|hot headed miscalculation,
we are in danger of losing embassies|in Saudi, Jordan and Egypt.
We're in danger|of losing our presence...
with every moderate|in the region.
Now they're gonna scream|"cover up".
The screaming will get so loud we'll|be sending Marines back over there,
and the body count of American|dead is gonna be higher than three.

Basically he wants Childers to take the fall, to prevent what he so thinks a shtty situation that it might cause. Even after watching the tape, and seeing that Childers was right to return fire, he still chooses to destroy the tape.

Even though the actions were justified because the crowd was firigin rounds at the Marines, it's not like Yemen was

Another poster noted the conversation where the advisor mentioned that 83 Yemenis died as opposed to 3 Americans. Their government may not have cared even if the actions were justified, so this was done to de-escalate a situation in the Middle East.
