Spoiler---Apple Pie in Interrogation Scene

Has anyone noticed the piece of apple pie in the interrogation scene? Major Hathaway is holding it at first, then sets it down on the metal table with surgical-looking instruments. What's this about?

Maybe he was planing to bribe Sinise's character with it =3
"Confess and prepare for being torn to pieces.. and I shall give you pie~."
He probably saw that this was no point in trying, so he set the pie on the table to eat himself later on )3

I imagine it's to reinforce his character, to show so he's ruthlessly dedicated to the pursuit of his goal that he'd quite happily eat lunch while watching someone being eviserated

That's a good possibility.

Or, since it's such an urgent situation, he has to eat when he can.
