when something is unknown, it has much more effect, and is much more frightening.

watch "2001: a space oddysee", when he is in the space ship and you can hear the aliens talking, it is much more powerful because it is left up to the imagination what they look like. if you could actually see them, they would probably just look laughable.

in the legend of troy (i mean the one homer wrote, not the film) for example, helen is said to be the most beautiful woman ever. it is powerful because you can't imagine someone who is so incomprehensibly beautiful that she tops everyone else in the world. if you are shown a picture of 'the most beautiful woman ever', you might not actually find her that beautiful, and the effect will be lost.

I completely agree. The movie wouldn't have been helped by showing some guy in a rubber alien suit or some cgi alien effect.

This is real science fiction, thought-provoking. As would be expected from Philip K. Dick. Not guys in funky suits playing cowboy with laser guns, which is people's idea of sf.

Never be complete.

as well as the above mentioned reasons there's also the budget. they had to use scenes from Starship Troopers and Armageddon to keep costs down, there's no way they could've afforded to make aliens that didn't look completely ridiculous

You are so wrong. I wanted to see the Centauri too. And yes, aliens, lasers or futuristic guns IS a big part of sci-fi. Just as futuristic buildings, futuristic ships, and other machinery from the future covered by this flick. It can be both thought-provoking and include aliens.

I agree with you, I also wanted to see the Centauri but was disappointed because I never got to see them. Feels like something important is missing.
