He played one of the three Union soldiers who accosted Natalie Portman, specifically the one who expressed concern for the baby.
SPOILER:
Sure can, he was the only soldier that wanted to cover up Natalie Portman's baby and then she shot him at the end after Jude Law let him go.
***SPOILER***
I think she missed, based on the fact she didn't really aim, the gun was almost as big as she was, and we never actually see him go down. I like to think, being the good guy he was, survived.
Edit: Just watched that scene again. I didn't remember it correctly. She blasted that boy to kingdom come.

If aliens should land today,
who would be more afraid?
It is really one of the best scenes in the movie. There is just so much going on. Natalie Portman did a great job showing that the women of the south were all going a little crazy with loneliness and stress. I thought that it was appropriate that she shot him even though he didn't really deserve it. Just a "life isn't fair," kind of deal.
Also liked Inman's strategy from a purely "action flick," perspective. I love the shot of him behind the door. You knew that the villains would get what they deserved.
I thought the look in Inman's eyes standing on the porch after she shot him was absolutely hauntingly beautiful. He had seen so much death and destruction and pointless blood, and this was just one more instance of how wrong that war was, and what it did to both sides of the struggle.

Thought that this scene was dumb. Firstly, Natalie Portman was miscast as a southern gal. Secondly the fact that she actually hits Cillian Murphy when she carelessly shoots that rifle (which is almost bigger than her I might add) while shaking like a leaf from 40 yards away is incredibly unrealistic.
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.
She had to shoot him really. If he found more union troops and told them she'd been harbouring a confederate who killed 2 of their guys they'd have burnt her house down and either left her to freeze/starve or just shot her.
