Some have suggested that an Albino would likely have been kept from joining the army as they are prone to some physical shortcomings like nosebleeds {which we see in the film) and other weaknesses with many of them effecting their eyesight.

This would explain his not being in the confederate army.

Do you think he wants some cheese?

Albinism can be just one of the syndroms of more complex genetic disorders so maybe the character in the movie wasn't taken to the army because of them. You can read about it in wikipedia. Not to mention that during war nobody would not carry an umbrella or anything like that for him and in a short while he would be terribly burnt and useless as a soldier :P
In the past also there were many stupid superstitions about albino people and maybe the army thought he would bring different kind of misfortunes upon his brothers-in-arms.

He was the coolest thing in the movie, if you ask me. I'm not particularly fond of Charlie Hunnam, but heck he was great in Cold Mountain and Children of Men.

Tell you what I got on my side - the confidence of youth.

Bosie is not an albino !

he has icy blue eyes: an albino's would be red.

fyi..
Bosie's sadistic behavior in the film is unlike that of the character in the novel, named Burch-

Hi Ideliane,

This is quite late, but I read an interview with Charlie Hunnam discussing the character. This was the first of his psycho roles to play down his pretty boy image. He played another in Children of Men. Apparently, Anthony Minghella built up the part of for him and they decided he would play the character as an albino to explain why he wasn't in uniform. I've only seen the film on TV, but his eyes did look red to me, at least on my television screen. I also agree that the character in the novel was not the sadistic monster he was in the film. Minghella broadened a number of the characters, something that I think ultimately worked against the film.

His eyes are purple in the film, but albinism isn't a specific thing, there are various different levels of albinism, and people with it can certainly have blue eyes, in fact they often do, it's only in the more extreme cases of albinism that people have completely white hair, extremely pale, almost literally white, skin, and purple/red eyes.

why was he albino?

Basically, because his pappy's jizz had reached its "use by" date. Fcked up genetic material produces fcked up babies. It's all covered in "Genetic Pathology for Dummies."
