I'm glad someone else was thinking the overall plot was inspired by The Odyssey. A few of the scenes were reminiscent of the Odyssey too, such where our "Odysseus" also narrowly avoids being seduced by The Sirens.
Of course there are other American South films inspired by The Odyssey, notably George Clooney's "Oh brother, where art thou".
But then, Homer's books have inspired a lot of other authors in the 3,200 years since the Trojan War, starting with large chunks Virgil's ""Aeneid" published in the second century A.D. I guess a book with a good plot and can inspire lots of other stories.
