Deserters

I loved the movie overall, and I especially liked Renee Zellweger's performance which was outstanding.

My only issue was that the film revolved around deserters. Deserters from a war are the most spineless, loathsome human beings ever to walk the earth, and I found it impossible to feel any sympathy for them. As a result, I could not wholly get into any of the emotions related to their characters, and the death of the deserters was a welcome event, not one of sadness as the film intended.

I did feel for the plight of the women, and enjoyed their story lines.

If you're going to take that attitude into the film, I'm surprised you could then say you even loved the film.

Contrived or otherwise, I saw the "deserters" as 3 traumatised injured guys (one, who was clearly going to die any way) who'd given the war effort their best shot, for little reward and saw little point in carrying on the good fight. We see too, that the dangers at home, may, in some ways, be more obvious, than those at the front and that perhaps more characters like Inman were needed back there.šŸ

Well said how the deserters had given the war their best shot and found the whole experience a losing battle. The whole movie was about deserters but those marauders were the lowest form of life looking for deserters when they themselves were deserters. The Sally scene when they run her husband through and crush her to the log fence was the most painful to watch.
