The Old Goat Woman (SPOILERS)

(SPOILERS) I rewatched this the other day primarily to watch the Old Mountain woman in her goat slaughtering scene. She was the best part of the movie for me. BEST LINE IN MOVIE: What they gonna do?! Cut short my young life?!

I was working as a projectionist when this came out and don't remember liking it all that much. Wattching it again the other night I really enjoyed several sequences quite a lot. Ray Winstone, Philip Seymore Hoffman, Brendan Gleason, Natalie Portman, and the albino guy all had really great roles with great satisfying scenes. I think the least interesting story was the love story between the two leads.

Highly recomend, especially to guys who think this is probably a "chick flick". While the love story sorta is a "chick flick" there are scenes of action, brutality, and sadism that fans of Quentin Tarantino, Sam Peckinpah, and Eli Roth will love.

Hey,

I just finished watching it and had almost exactly the same reaction. I had never really watched it properly before -- saw lots of it once, but came in in the middle and didn't give it my full attention. I remember being surprised that it left me so flat that first time, because I love Ray Winstone and Brendan Gleeson. I don't object to chick flicks, but I think Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellwenger left me cold (no pun intended) the first time around.

But this time, it seemed much more like an adventure story of the guy trying to get back from the front, like a Civil War era Odyssey, rather than a more typical love story. And it was interesting, and somewhat subtle, to watch Kidman's charater learn how to take care of herself over the course of the movie.

But the goat woman was my favorite scene. The actual scene when she slaughters the goat is literally the sweetest part of the movie. It is such a contrast to all the other killing in the movie; so sane; so grounded; so humane.

Good movie.

That old mountain woman was such a great character and I really love the actress who played her. I wish she had had more screen time (but then, JUDE LAW's character had to move on to see his girlfriend, so....)
